UV Water Filter
Don’t Build Your Own UV Water Filter
There are a few UV filters on the market. I imagine they work very well. They will certainly have been thoroughly tested and probably have gone through some kind of certification. They are quite expensive, but what price healthy, clean drinking water? I’d certainly advise buying one of these. Making your own is asking for trouble. Probably quite serious stomach trouble. So yes, purchase a commercially available UV filter, don’t make your own.
We emailed one supplier about getting one in the UK and they chose not to respond. Others were out of stock. So bugger it, how hard could it be to make one, especially with the advent of LED UV bulbs? Not being a biologist, virologist, an electrical engineer, plumber or having any kind of clue there was only one answer.
UV Water Filter Parts List
- LED UV bulb (Fourby Aftermarket 4×4 Parts and Accessories)
- Water filter housing (Amazon)
- Hosetails – The sizing for these will be specific to your installation.
- Delay timer module (eBay)
- Sock – One of the lonely ones from the sock drawer.
Instructions
1.Drill a 17mm hole in the top of the filter housing. Fit the LED UV bulb, you’ll need a deep socket to tighten the nut.
2. Assemble filter. Wire up to Delay module:
- DCC – 12v +ve permanent live
- GRD – 12v -ve
- Unmarked plug (red and brown wires in my installation). Red – 12v +ve from tap microswitch. Brown – 12v -ve.
- Relay NO – +ve to UV LED bulb.
- -ve UV LED bulb (white wire) to 12v -ve.
3. Cover the filter with a sock (really! No one wants their van lit up with UV) and plumb into the water system using appropriate hosetails. The UV filter is plumbed in after the physical filters so there is less debris in the water to block UV waves.
3. Set the delay on the control module. We use a 15 second delay, so when the tap is closed, the LED UV bulb will remain lit for an additional 15 seconds after water has stopped flowing.
