Sitting at home, surrounded by the boxes that contained our remaining possessions and waiting on news was getting depressing.\u00a0 The furniture was all gone, sold or donated. Only the camping furniture remained and that felt all wrong without a fire pit to gather around. Unhealthy thoughts of collapsing chains filled my head and it was getting worse with each passing day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A change of scene was needed and to start putting the plan into action, or semi-action at least.\u00a0 We loaded the camping furniture into Godzuki!, fired up his rumbling old engine and pointed his stubby little nose towards Yorkshire.\u00a0 A few hours later we made an overnight stop at a CAMPRA<\/a> aire and got a decent night’s kip.\u00a0 Waking later than usual we found two horses outside the van.\u00a0 The site owner was as surprised as us.\u00a0 Turns out they were escapees from across the village.\u00a0 Seems that we\u2019re not the only ones looking for greener grass. \u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Taking the scenic route, we meandered through towns and villages of North Yorkshire and County Durham where we\u2019d seen places to rent.\u00a0 The days continued in this way, wandering through the area, trying to get a feel for life here.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

We had no news on the house sale and no rental agency was going to take us seriously without a date, so we fixed our eyes on the coast to take our minds off our living situation.\u00a0 Well, not living situation, we can manage that quite well in the van.\u00a0 This is all about an address really.\u00a0 Life was feeling a little weird.\u00a0 Not really on holiday, not really travelling, only vaguely looking for somewhere to base ourselves.\u00a0 After a lifetime of deadlines and project plans, this was all feeling a bit aimless.\u00a0 I have to remind myself that we\u2019re lucky to be in this position.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The gothic ambience of Whitby raised the spirits.\u00a0 We walked the ancient, narrow streets, the harbour and along the beach. Dolphins entertained us off the harbour arm and the town was still busy with day visitors despite being out of season.\u00a0 A small campsite a few miles outside of town provided a base for the weekend. The Cleveland Way coastal path was easily accessible from the site and provided much needed long walk into town to earn some fish and chips.\u00a0 It would have been nice to spend the evening in town, but a night time hike back along the coastal path seemed like asking for trouble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not everything on the van front was tickety boo. The long dark and chilly nights were showing up and issue with our battery charging.\u00a0 A new DC-DC charger was not performing anywhere close to expectations and we were running out of power; our solar setup is little more than baggage at this time of year in the UK.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

A bit of Googling threw up some possible configuration changes to make it work with an ageing HiAce\u2019s electrical system<\/a> and suddenly we were charging as expected, although not before a night at the stunningly peaceful Ellis Close Farm outside of Scarborough was required to recharge the battery off EHU first.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The seaside tour continued in Scarborough.\u00a0 We\u2019d stopped there years ago when overnighting at the Sealife centre was tolerated, but that option was long gone.\u00a0 Surprisingly the council seems to accept overnight parking on the seafront and even installed a CDP.\u00a0 It seemed rude not to make use of the offer and in return spend some money in the town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the trees continued their autumnal change of colour, so our plans changed too. Our stop in Scarborough also brought news on the house front – the chain had broken.\u00a0 I’d suspected it was coming and while getting the confirmation was not great news, at least we knew where we were. And while not ideal, we are fortunate to have the flexibility to deal with this.\u00a0 Suddenly we\u2019re considering buying right away rather than renting for a while.\u00a0 Is this plan C now?\u00a0 or D, E or F?\u00a0 I\u2019ve lost track.\u00a0 But it feels better to have something to aim for now and maybe we can get the travelling plan back on track.\u00a0 We celebrated the change of plan with a sodden walk around Scarborough’s castle in the rain before dripping all over the floor of a nearby cafe bar. They seemed used to it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
