{"id":1166,"date":"2024-03-10T19:19:50","date_gmt":"2024-03-10T19:19:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/3tenths.co.uk\/?p=1166"},"modified":"2024-03-10T19:19:52","modified_gmt":"2024-03-10T19:19:52","slug":"ancient-cities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/3tenths.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/03\/10\/ancient-cities\/","title":{"rendered":"Ancient Cities"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dion<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Boom!<\/em>\u00a0 The van shudders as the explosion rips through the air.\u00a0 <em>Boom!<\/em> More <em>Boom!<\/em> explosions <em>Boom!<\/em>\u00a0 World war three appears to have started and no one sent a three minute warning.\u00a0 High on our viewpoint on the side of the mountain we can see nothing, but can hear and feel the army on the coastal plains below us fire their artillery at (hopefully) imagined targets.\u00a0 When it feels like they have started aiming at us we decide it&#8217;s time to get out of dodge and continue our journey through antiquity. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The carpark of the Dion archaeological park makes a convenient home for the night, setting us up nicely to visit in the morning, \u00a0 I can\u2019t imagine getting away with something like this at home, but no one seems to bat an eyelid.\u00a0 A pregnant cat befriends us and tries to move into the van.\u00a0 Along with litter, stray animals are common across Greece.\u00a0 We often find a dog or two guarding the van or see packs searching the refuse.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2pwca4e\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53506569783_cc43fda8b3_c.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1581\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2pw6Vkb\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53505548052_cf5c2d9594_c.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1767\" width=\"533\" height=\"800\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>This is our first cat, not much more than a kitten herself really. \u00a0 We make a fuss of her but we have no food so she abandons us to go hunting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Dion, under the watchful gaze of Mount Olympus, we learn a little more about the Greek gods of old.\u00a0 Dion was a site of great religious importance. It takes its name from Dios, meaning \u2018of Zeus\u2019 and was home to a great sanctuary dedicated to the god who lived on the mountain.\u00a0 The archaeological site is huge and there are two distinct sides to the site, the religious and on the other side of the modern road, a vast excavation of the adjoining city.\u00a0 Important finds, which include an awesome looking water organ, are displayed at the museum a few minutes walk away.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Greece is chock full of ancient ruins, it is the home of \u2018Ancient Greece\u2019 after all, and it\u2019s easy to overdo them to the point that they lose their fascination.\u00a0 That would be a great shame, each site has its individual nuances and histories.\u00a0 And as much as I love the amphitheatres apparently there are only so many times you can perform Julius Caesar to an adoring audience (poor Rosana). Perhaps I should try Taming of the Shrew?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2pw6PRA\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53505529632_ae8383edc4_c.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1617\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>We take a break from the past and camp on a beach.  I look along the shoreline and  I am not sure that I believe my eyes.\u00a0 Flamingos!  Actual, pink flamingos!  I was really not expecting to see them in Greece, but apparently they are not uncommon.\u00a0 We watch them wade for a while, but they get fed up with being stalked and fly off to find somewhere more private.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vergina<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2pwdmN5\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53506804384_0caf551177_c.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_2044\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Refreshed after some time with nature and we&#8217;re back on the history tour in the town of Vergina for the tombs of the Macedonian Kings.\u00a0 This stunning exhibition and excavation of the tomb of King Philip of Macedonia (father of Alexander the Great) is well presented and atmospheric. On a hill above the town lie the extensive remains of the Royal Palace and the small amphitheatre where Philip was assassinated.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pella<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Pella has a large and interesting museum and another vast archaeological site.\u00a0 The sheer size of the agora is impressive in itself, and in an ancient roadway we see the ridges left by cartwheels &#8211; dimensions that will eventually determine the size of NASA\u2019s space shuttle.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2pwcGW7\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53506677018_7f1da80262_c.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_2131\" width=\"800\" height=\"496\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>At a lakeside camp another cat befriends us.\u00a0 We pass the hours watching the birds, although there are no flamingos here.\u00a0 A fisherman returns with his catch.\u00a0 He shows us his hand, fingers missing due to an injury sustained working on the German north sea fishing fleet.\u00a0 Now he nets fresh water fish in his native country. We find a small carp he\u2019s dropped, or maybe discarded, and feed it to the cat (forthwith to be known as the happiest cat in the word).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Philippi<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2pwTMaq\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53514495726_046683a367_c.jpg\" alt=\"20240120_084139\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Our final archaeological site of Greece is Philippi.\u00a0 If I thought sleeping in the car park at Dion we was a bit cheeky, Philippi takes it to a whole new level and I bet myself a cheese sandwich we\u2019ll be evicted from this UNESCO site before the night is out.\u00a0 I am quite surprised when not only do we last the night, but when we open the curtains in the morning we find a large green expedition truck parked next to us, they too had chanced the night in the car park.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve had a good run of weather on our wanderings around Greece\u2019s ancient sites, but our luck has run out and it\u2019s pouring with rain.\u00a0 Proper cats and dogs.  We can\u2019t delay our visit, I\u2019ve given our insurance company the date we\u2019ll be leaving the EU and they are too much hassle to deal with to change it.\u00a0 In the spirit of there&#8217;s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing, we suit up and head out into the park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Another impressive archaeological site, another huge amphitheater, another performance of Julius Caesar.\u00a0 One of the things that stands Philippi out is the story that St. Paul was imprisoned there.\u00a0 There is a sign, but little other evidence.\u00a0 We meet our Danish neighbours splashing through the puddles and chat soddenly for a while.\u00a0 They\u2019re more interested in the story of St. Paul than we are.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2pwPfCT\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53513612587_1f4a98ea10_c.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_2379\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Chat turns to future plans and we discover we plan to cross to T\u00fcrkiye on the same day.
